Despite the fact this hooded man is giving you your main quests, it seems quickly evident he doesn’t have much power out in the world, and you’re left to solve all the problems yourself. You begin playing a female character, which is later revealed to be bound to another demon and is attempting to kill the man who summoned you. The so called members of the Council have been lost or corrupted these were the people that brought down the oppressive regime that was in control of the kingdom. You seem to be largely a pawn in an otherwise large treeline of expanding plots to conquer various areas, with the added twists of having another plotline in the Shadow Realm with the Blind Demon. Most of the capitals wage war on others, forcing fealty on the conquered. There is no ruler of Heretic Kingdoms, rather a large string of civil wars and fragile treaties that keep the whole place standing. Your soul is entwined with one of the main characters, and must work together in both the Shadow Realm and the living to unveil a plot to seize control of the Heretic Kingdoms. You take the role as a demon puppet master, the Devourer, who is summoned and then bound to a specific hero in the beginning of the game. It’s definitely something to bear in mind when reading the rest of the review, as this is not remotely attempting to be a Diablo clone, more a middle ground between Divinity: Original Sin, and Diablo/Torchlight. From the forefront the developers have put forward the idea that rather than focus on a Hack ‘n’ Slash ARPG with tonnes of loot, they were more interested in creating a formula for a seamless party based ARPG that focuses more on the character’s story and conflict. This is the follow on game Heretic Kingdoms: The Inquisition (otherwise known as Kult: Heretic Kingdoms), which can be more similarly associated to a typical original Diablo style game.

Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms is a story-focused ARPG, developed by Games Farm (formerly 3D People), and published by bitComposer Games through Steam Early Access, using the oddly named and unknown OGRE engine (notable for Torchlight).
